Herrizki is a computer tool resembling a game and suited to a whole range of platforms; it can be played over the Internet as well as through specialised apps for use on Android and IOS devices.
The aim of this tool is to work on local Basque by using attractive games. The aim is not to use correct language, but for each user to learn more about the dialect in his/her own area and, consequently, use it more. As it is a tool designed to encourage local Basque, it requires the user to be a native Basque speaker or to have attained a high level in the language.
The tool offers various games designed to promote Basque: the completing of old sayings, word searches, guessing the names of the farms in the Gernika-Lumo area, and hangman. Besides that, it issues a weekly challenge question and provides the chance to follow it in action via Twitter (#herrizki) and over a chat forum.
Anyone can be a user, because the tool is designed to raise the level of Basque higher and higher. So far, it has been based on the local dialect of the Busturia area and those responsible for the tool are working to spread it to many other areas. It will soon become an enjoyable tool to work on the dialect in any area in the Basque Country; in fact, that was its challenge: there was no device linked to cutting-edge technologies to work on local dialects. Herrizki is a resource that brings together ordinary Basque and today’s Basque speakers.
