This is an initiative to promote the transmission of Basque through the family in the Oarsoaldea district (Errenteria, Oiartzun, Lezo and Pasaia). We offer families information, guidance, and materials produced to suit the age range of the children. Likewise, we have a leisure offer for youngsters from 12 to 16.
We attach great importance to communication and sensitivity, and they are given the greatest weight in the initiatives organised.
As regards communication, the message is spread to the general public through the print press and radio. For example, we have radio broadcasts to make Basque-speaking parents aware of the importance that communication between them should be in Basque and to build sensitivity around this issue. We also have booklets and guides geared towards the parents of new-born babies: the guide entitled Guraso gara (We are parents), a booklet Haurren hazkuntza faseak eta hizkuntza (Phases in child growth, and language), the Hazi-Hezi magazine, and a catalogue of products in Basque for schoolchildren and students from 3 to 16. We make them all available through different channels.
We organise the following events:
1. The Oarsoirriak project. Leisure programmes for the whole year are organised taking advantage of the resources in the towns; once every three months, we turn an event that is run by one town into an event for the whole district and invite people from all the other towns to attend. In addition, in the autumn we organise the Irrigintza festival and all the classes of 3 to 8-year-olds in the schools in the district subscribe to the Irria magazine.
2. The Kuadrillategi project. This is a project to change the language habits of youngsters who meet in groups of friends (a leisure offer), and for when they form couples to enable them, among other things, to establish the language between them in Basque. This project is geared towards groups of friends in the 12-16 age bracket. As regards managing all this, each town operates on its own, but we maintain an overall minimum coordination on a district level in order to undertake enrolments, mediums, image, certain actions, etc. together.
3. Basque course for non-Basque-speaking parents. Throughout the academic year we offer special Basque courses for non-Basque-speaking parents (or one parent) of children from 0-12 years old.
