AEK is an organisation working to revive Basque and re-Basquise the Basque Country. Adult Basquisation and literacy constitute its field of activity: producing teaching materials, doing research, etc., running training courses for teachers, and organising cultural activities and awareness campaigns in support of Basque.
The language is not only a tool for communication, it is also a means of interaction and coexistence among people, so that knowledge of it necessarily involves the capacity to use it with people. So the aim of AEK is to get everyone who is studying Basque in the organisation to be capable of using it in different areas and moments of their lives. That is the basis of its methodology. The learning of Basque has to be intimately linked to its practice and be pleasant and fun.
These are the three fields in which AEK is working:
Knowledge: Right now, it has over 100 euskaltegis (centres for learning Basque) and «gau-eskolas» (night schools) that had xxxxx students during the 2014-2015 academic year. It also offers all the teaching levels required by the European Curriculum Framework and for this it organises courses for groups, online courses and «barnetegis» (residential courses).
Use: It works in two fields in particular: firstly, it offers activities and services to encourage the use of Basque in companies, in the administration and in the institutions; secondly, it provides advice on encouraging the use of Basque and on the automatic management of the teaching process, using for this purpose ongoing improvement and participatory methodology. But it is not always easy to use what has been learnt in the euskaltegi outside. Aware of this problem, AEK organises «mintzapraktika» (conversation practice) sessions outside the euskaltegis.
Promotion: every other year, AEK organises the Korrika, its most popular, mass activity in support of Basque.
