We are a group of sociologists working on the study of the two minority languages native to Aragon: Catalan and Aragonese. We have conducted three pieces of research so far: a study of the 2011 census analysing the number of speakers of each of the two languages, a report on the uses of the native languages in the election campaigns run by the political parties, and we have collaborated in the use of a survey in the area of Catalan (2014).
Given that Aragon in a multilingual and multicultural region, this cultural reality involves complex, social realities. That is why the group of sociologists and sociolinguists is channelling its effort, firstly, towards exploring and disseminating the situation of these two languages in Aragon, and secondly, towards organising meetings, lectures and courses designed to teach study techniques in the field of sociology and sociolinguistics.
The group is sensitive to the impact of public policies on Aragon’s bilingual communities: the Catalan and Aragonese-speaking communities, and is working to gather knowledge about Aragon’s sociolinguistic situation as it is totally subject to the rights stipulated by the legislation. The purpose is to get the current and future management of multilingualism to reflect the cultural and linguistic diversity of Aragon in a much more respectful way.
