The drafting of a planned programme (2015-2019) to develop language technologies for the Occitan language.
The aim is to produce a framework document that can be proposed to the partner groups so that it can be integrated and set up within the framework of the public linguistic policies. This document, which is already available, firstly makes a diagnosis of Occitan digital technology with an inventory of the existing digital technology (on-line dictionaries, spell checkers, etc.) and then establishes a list of needs in terms of tools and resources: machine translators, predictive keyboards for smartphones, etc.
Occitan digital technology has seen considerable development over the last few years with respect to digital resources and tools and this has taken place in various fields: communications, linguistics, heritage, encyclopaedic content, research, audiovisual materials, etc.
However, despite these efforts we have seen that Occitan remains considerably behind in digital matters. It is virtually absent in the computing programs for the general public, in the social networks and in the fields of communication and leisure. There are many crucial challenges for the transmission of the language… For the new generations, especially, the task ahead is huge.
That is why the Congress with the support of ADEPFO (L’Association de Développement des Pyrénées par la Formation) has decided to undertake unprecedented action in the matter of Occitan digital technology.
So about twenty people representing the social use of language (education, training, institutions, research) have carried out an eight-month-long study with the help of two organisations in the Basque Autonomous Community: the training company Media.kom and the Elhuyar foundation. Meetings have also been held with specialists in language technologies for the Basque, Catalan, Breton and Welsh languages and a document has been drawn up summarising their work and recommendations for dealing with the situation of Occitan.
