AIZU!, a magazine written in simple «basic» Basque, is a tool to support those learning the language or who are unaccustomed to reading in Basque. The publisher of the magazine is AEK. Apart from supplying students with reading matter, it is also an important source of teaching material for teachers.
The magazine AIZU!, which has been going for 25 years, is a publication written in «basic» Basque and is geared towards people who are not in the habit of reading in Basque, in particular those who are learning the language. Ten issues are published throughout the year and are distributed via newsstands and libraries and also through subscription.
It helps to speed up the learning process and can also be used outside the classroom. The student develops his/her reading comprehension, devotes more time to Basque and comes into direct contact with Basque culture, its personalities, etc.
AIZU! publishes mainly articles relating to cultural and social subjects in the form of reportages, interviews and short news items. On its leisure pages, there is also a corner to clarify grammatical doubts; from time to time it also publishes short pieces of work written by students. All the texts are written in simple Basque and have a small vocabulary key for the more difficult terms and structures. Over 11,000 copies of the magazine are distributed each month among students, teachers and subscribers.
