Redadeg is a relay race first launched in 2008 and takes place every two years. In a festive, popular and committed way it crosses Brittany, by day as well as by night, to symbolise the transmission of a living, creative, dynamic Breton language down the generations and across the territories.
The kilometres are sold and the profits are shared out to support projects in favour of the Breton language. These are new initiatives selected on the basis of reports; they are very varied and may be linked to education, leisure, the media, sports or culture, but they always encourage the use of Breton in social and family life.
The race passes through the 5 Breton départements covering 1,700 km and crossing over 300 municipalities. In 2016, in its 5th edition, the participants will be setting out from Saint-Herblain, near Nantes, on 29 April and will reach Locoal-Mendon on 7 May going all the way to the heart of the Trophé Roñsed-Mor, la fête des bagadoù.
The Redadeg defends the principle “Brezhoneg ha plijadur!” or “The Breton Language and Pleasure!” It can be run with the family, friends or colleagues, in fancy dress, with music; at walking pace or on skates, in baby strollers or by bike, etc. It provides some atmosphere for or the chance to enjoy the local fiestas, concerts, theatre, stands, breakfasts, etc. organised depending on the time and place that the race is passing through. The important thing is to participate, be seen, enjoy oneself, and it is also an opportunity to hear Breton, make people hear Breton and use Breton!
