The Small Pocket Basque Dictionary has various basic words and phrases (greetings, names of places, days, months, numbers, etc.) so that visitors who come to Donostia-San Sebastian can become familiar with them and use them. All these words have been translated and published in eight languages: Basque, Spanish, Galician, Catalan, French, English, Italian and German.
The dictionary has been divided into five sections. The first covers greetings (good night, hello, welcome, etc.), the second, the names of places and directions for getting to them (on the left, below, far, tourist information office, pharmacy, etc.); the third has words relating to accommodation and catering (twin-bedded room, restaurant, baguette, set menu, etc.); the fourth, the days, months, seasons, etc.; and finally, the numbers.
It also has various explanations and details about the history and situation of Basque. For example, it provides data on the speakers in Donostia-San Sebastian and Gipuzkoa.
This project is designed to build awareness among tourists and visitors by making the language reality of the place known and offering them the chance to use some words in Basque.
These dictionaries are handed out free of charge in popular tourist locations: tourist information offices, hotels, various bars and museums, the Tabakalera arts centre, etc. It is also distributed among professional people who come from outside for conferences and cultural events: the Film Festival, the Jazz Festival, Dferia, etc.
