GLISSEGUNA is sliding sports day organised by the association Seaska, the federation of Ikastolas (Basque-medium schools) in the Continental Basque Country. It aims to encourage leisure pursuits in Basque through activities relating to sliding sports (surfing, skating, skimboarding, paddle boarding, etc.). They take place in Basque or in French to show that children can play in Basque.
At the start of the 21st century youngsters in the Continental Basque Country have two conflicting perceptions about Basque: one is that according to a survey conducted by the Public Institution for Basque Culture, today’s youngsters see that Basque has long been despised and they associate it with the life of their grandparents; the other is that ikastola students see Basque as having acquired the reputation for serious, boring learning. When dealing with these two perceptions, youngsters often do not know what place to give to Basque in the family, with friends or in social relations.
With the aim of promoting the use of Basque in leisure pursuits, during Glisseguna priority is given to trendy sports, above all to those on our coast between Anglet and Hendaye; indirectly, it reaches the ikastolas inland, as well.
Nearly twenty sports associations (the Surfing School, the Roller School, the Skating School, the Surfing Federation, etc.) participate in it during the third weekend in September. This event has become an important date in Anglet for the local associations. It brings together a total of 500 participants and 2,000 spectators.
