It is an ikastola or Basque-medium school that promotes the use of Basque through the social organisation of children. A largely non-Basque-speaking environment and also poor relationships among the students have led to the implementing of a mechanism of this type in Uztaritze.
At the ikastola in Uztaritze the children are offered significant participation in their coexistence with each other: the oldest students at certain specific moments and in certain specific places look after the youngest ones and this (organised) intermingling ensures social relationships in Basque in the school sphere, by implementing ongoing motivation among the children, which is underpinned by the cooperative work of the professional team.
The task of the education team and of the parents, in particular, is to provide Basque with meaning and life so that it is not just a mere ikastola language.
We want to educate individuals who live, feel and think in Basque; those who will be supported in autonomy, who will have established lines to follow in social integration with the future in mind and who have their self-knowledge and integral development properly developed. Starting from the child’s interests and knowledge, and bearing in mind his/her capacity for transmission in addition to the transmission of content, we want him/her to see notions that are linked to the reality and which will be useful for him/her. That is why it is also essential, for example, to learn and teach coexistence with our environment and with the nature close to us. Because working on content alone is of no use, if the child is not going to see that it is effective, or that it is not of any use in his/her reality; in other words, in play, in relations with friends and family, among people.
