The Debate Club is seeking to coordinate efforts and resources to encourage the oral use of Galician among students in the 3rd and 4th years of Statutory Secondary Education and in the 1st year of the 6th form. Its aims are: to be a hub of attraction for the language; to provide students with an opportunity to reflect, become motivated and meet each other; to provide them with an opportunity to work together; and help them to go further into current issues so that they can express their opinions about the issues that really affect them.
The debates are set up around a subject specified in advance over a period of several days. They also provide a space of knowledge and bring young people from different backgrounds together: from urban and rural environments, large and small schools and with a different level of the use of the language. Two teams take part in each debate; one of them for the motion and the other against it.
The teams registered are mixed and are made up of groups with a minimum of four and a maximum of ten people. Each team has a teacher/person responsible for preparation purposes; these individuals will also fulfil an advisory function and represent the team before the organisation.
The activity is being promoted by municipal language normalisation departments in collaboration with the teams involved in getting the language normalised and revived in secondary schools. In actual fact, there are various levels of organisation and collaboration allowing equality of opportunities in the participation of students from town councils of differing sizes and the promoting of spaces to activate the use of the Galician language.
