Bersntoler Kulturinstitut takes care of preservation and promotion of the language and the culture of Mòcheni, a German linguistic minority, who live in Trentino (Italy). It promotes and supports research in linguistics, ethnografic and historical fields.
Concerning to linguistics, Bersntoler Kulturinstitut started some years ago a process of codification and standardization of mòcheno language, trying to focus on the fundamental rules of grammar and syntax and trying to create a lexical data base, which is constantly implemented. It also collects toponymies in mòcheno language.
Concerning to ethnografy and history, Bersntoler Kulturinstitut includes three open-air museums, a farmhouse, a mill and a sawmill, situated in different location in the Valley, where Mòcheni live. It has a permanent exhibition in their offices and it organizes temporary exhibit about specific topics, like for example peddler (one of the traditional activities of Mòcheni) or the relationship between Mòcheni and their woods. It also created a literary walk about the Austrian writer Robert Musil, who wrote a short story, which took place in the Valley, where Mòcheni live.
Kulturinstitut publishes finally books and other material in order to communicate the results of its research.
These practices are also a way to engage Mòcheni community and make them aware of the importance of their language and their culture. For that reason, Kulturinstitut takes care of communication in mòcheno language, especially through a magazine and a television broadcast. It also prepares educational materials.
