Oc Telé is television via the Internet exclusively in Occitan and which has been in existence for the last two years. It allows programmes to be watched in Occitan free of charge. It emerged out of the wish of two regions to see the development of audiovisual production in Occitan and the expertise of a Breton operator that a few years ago had set up Brezoweb, television in Breton broadcast over the Internet.
Oc Telé is a tool that has made possible collaborations with producers of audiovisual materials in other languages such as Breton or Basque. It broadcasts programmes for youngsters but also for any audience. It offers programmes available on demand and sometimes live ones, which can be watched afterwards within the space of one month. It broadcasts productions dubbed into Occitan by “Conta’m”, a company that specialises in dubbing programmes in Occitan for youngsters (cartoons). Thanks to Oc Telé, today these programmes are watched by tens of thousands of people whereas in the past they were more restricted.
The absence of television channels in Occitan has prompted the setting up of Oc Téle. The launching of a dubbing unit for children’s programmes was not sufficient. A means was needed to reach more people. Right now, the programmes dubbed by Conta'm (supported by communities such as the Región de Aquitane, the Región Midi-Pyrénées, the Département des Pyrénées Atlantiques or the Región Rhône-Alpes) have their place in Oc-Telé.
