Merkataritzan eta ostalaritzan ere euskaraz

The aim of this practice is to identify and promote the establishments that allow customers to speak in Basque in the commercial, hotel and catering, and services sectors.
 
Visits are made to the establishments in Donostia-San Sebastian one by one, information is provided about the project, checks are made to see whether the requirements are met and, if so, the agreement to participate in the project is signed. To participate, there are basically two requirements:
 
1- 50 % of the staff who deal with the public have to be able to speak Basque. As a minimum, half of the members of staff who deal with customers have to be able to express themselves adequately in Basque.
 
2- The staff will undertake to say the first word in Basque and will guarantee this option for any customer who wants to speak in Basque.
 
The establishments that meet these requirements and which are interested in participating in the project will affix a sticker in such a way that it can be seen from outside (on the door or shop window), so that when the customers see it, they will know that they can speak in Basque at that particular establishment.
 
In addition, the establishments are made known via www.merkatari.eus and  www.donostiaeuskaraz.eus through an interactive map.
 
Finally, campaigns to promote these establishments are run so that citizens know where they can receive the service in Basque.
